Calculate Solar Panel System Size From Your Electricity Bill

If you are planning a solar PV system installation, the first question is always: what size system do I need? An undersized system leaves you paying high electricity bills. An oversized system wastes capital on unneeded panels and inverter capacity.

You can calculate the exact solar system size using your monthly electricity bill and tariff rate. This guide walks through the process step by step, with worked examples for residential solar applications in any market globally.

Quick Answer: Monthly bill of $150 at $0.12/kWh = 1,250 kWh/month. In most climates, this requires a 9.5 to 10.0 kWp solar system to offset completely.

Step 1: Find Your Monthly Energy Consumption (kWh)

Your electricity bill shows both the total amount due and the tariff rate (price per kilowatt-hour, shown as $/kWh, Rs./kWh, or the local currency equivalent). Monthly energy consumption is:

Monthly Energy (kWh) = Monthly Bill Amount ÷ Tariff Rate (per kWh)

Example (US Market): Bill of $150 at $0.12/kWh:

150 ÷ 0.12 = 1,250 kWh/month

Example (South Asia Market): Bill of Rs. 30,000 at Rs. 50/kWh:

30,000 ÷ 50 = 600 kWh/month

This is the amount of electrical energy your home uses monthly. Your solar array must generate this much to zero out your bill.

Step 2: Understand Solar PV System Rating (kWp)

Solar panels are rated in kilowatts peak (kWp) — the maximum DC power under Standard Test Conditions (1,000 W/m² irradiance, 25°C cell temperature). What matters for sizing is specific yield: annual energy produced per installed kWp.

Specific yield values are based on average residential solar installations with optimal tilt and orientation. Actual yield varies with local weather, shading, and system configuration.

Step 3: Calculate Your Required Solar PV System Size (kWp)

Required DC Array (kWp) = Monthly Energy (kWh) ÷ Monthly Yield per kWp

Example 1 (US, Temperate): 1,250 kWh ÷ 110 kWh/kWp = 11.36 kWp → round to 11.5 kWp

Example 2 (South Asia, Subtropical): 600 kWh ÷ 135 kWh/kWp = 4.44 kWp → round to 4.5 kWp

Note: Practical system sizes are available in 0.5 kWp increments. Always round up to the next 0.5 kWp to ensure sufficient generation year-round, especially in winter months when solar irradiance is lower.

Step 4: Determine How Many Solar Panels You Need

Modern residential PV modules range from 400W to 700W+. In 2026, 550W-580W panels dominate the residential market globally. To find panel count:

Panel Count = (System kWp × 1000) ÷ Panel Wattage (W)

Example (11.5 kWp system with 550W panels):

11,500 ÷ 550 = 20.9 → round up to 21 panels (11.55 kWp actual)

String Balancing Consideration

Stringing 21 panels gives an odd count. On a dual-MPPT inverter (most common for 10-12 kW range), you would place 10 panels on one MPPT and 11 on the other for a total of 21. This creates a voltage imbalance between strings, which most modern inverters handle through independent MPPT tracking. However, an even split (10 + 10 = 20 panels with 580W modules) is often preferred for shading tolerance and balanced voltage across MPPTs. Your choice of panel wattage directly affects string balancing flexibility.

Step 5: Select the Right Solar Inverter Size

The solar inverter must match the DC array. A DC/AC ratio of 1.15 to 1.35 is typical — the inverter is slightly smaller than the panel array because panels rarely operate at nameplate power.

Inverter Size (kW) = System (kWp) ÷ 1.25

For 11.55 kWp: 11.55 ÷ 1.25 = 9.24 kW → nearest standard: 10 kW inverter

Step 6: Check Roof Space Requirements

A 550W solar panel measures approximately 2,274 mm × 1,134 mm (2.58 m²). Fire codes require 30% roof setback for walkways and wind protection. For 21 panels:

(21 × 2.58) ÷ 0.70 = 77.4 m² (approx. 833 sq ft)
